Starting from home
The Equality Project (TEP): Starting from Home has developed a series of community workshops on addressing household inequalities. The programme will be piloted in informal settlements in Kenya and Tanzania to test its design and impact on gender relations among low-income families.
This programme is driven by the idea that gender equality starts at home. The household is a domain where unequal social norms are often taught and reinforced. Social bias is one of the main barriers that blocks progress on achieving greater gender equality.
The workshops developed by TEP are designed to be completed by couples together, as the views of both partners have an impact on the progress of the whole family. It is important to work with both women and men on breaking down gender preconceptions. Shifting perspectives towards a more equal society is only possible when men and women realise that they have to respect each other and that everyone has to be given an opportunity to grow.
The main message of the programme is that partners should work together as a team and develop a shared vision for their family. We would like couples to leave the programme with the belief that empowering women benefits everyone in the family and that by working together they can achieve goals they could not achieve on their own.
This project is funded by the University of Glasgow internal call the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) via the Scottish Funding council.
Workshops focused on empowering homes for gender equality and positive change.
